The Comet, The Solstice and the New Moon

“To move
Frantic, like comets,  towards our bliss,
Forgetting that we always miss,
And so to seek and fly the sun,
By turns, around which love should run.” Gerard Manley Hopkins

Throughour time the appearance of a comet was considered extremely significant to astrologers. Comets were seen as messengers – bringing to light hidden information and signalling energy shifts both personally and for the collective.

The comet 31/ATLAS (You’d think there might be a more poetic name!) made its closest pass to earth on December 19 – in close proximity to the New Moon on the 19th and the Winter Solstice on the 21.

The chart for the Winter Solstice is said to describe the time between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox. The comet as is part of that picture – indicating the influence of the comet throughout this time.

Comets herald a time of a new beginning and the potential to move to a state of consciousness which is more appropriately aligned with the time in which we are living. Comets also associated with increased compassion and awareness.

It’s wise throughout this season to provide down time to integrate information which may surface.

Venus Conjuncts Juno in Sagittarius

“Scorates had it wrong. It’s not the unexamined,  but finally, the uncommitted life that is not worth living.” William Sloane Coffin

“Genuine commitment is a journey into the unknown.” Madonna Kolbenschlag

Winter arrived Sunday at the Winter Solstice – when the Sun entered Capricorn. Still, there are several planets and asteroids in the sign of Sagittarius now, including Venus and Juno which are conjunct for the next few days.

The sign of Sagttarius is associated with distant horizons – both inner and outer. Outer horizons in terms of travel and foreign countries and cultures and inner horizons in terms of philosophy and learning  -which also broaden our understanding.

Juno is the goddess of commitment – the kind of commitments we make to ourselves and to others. For the next few days it’s  a good time to open the door to new ideas for the future . What is it you’d like to be committed to working towards in the New Year?

One of the Sabian symbols for this time is, “The sculptor’s vision is slowly but surely taking form.”
